What is your educational and work experience background?

I began my career with an education in Cartography, where I focused on creating maps, plans, and cross-sections—originally by hand using pen and ink, which combined technical precision with artistic flair. This eventually evolved into CAD-based drafting, which streamlined the work, though it changed the creative nature of the role. I went on to work with geological drafting firms and in the communications sector before transitioning into the oil and gas industry. There, I was given the opportunity to move into seismic and well data management—a pivotal shift in my career—supported by extensive training, both locally and internationally.

What are some of the highlights of your career?

One of the key highlights of my career was transforming the quality of foundational data in a major corporation—from being inconsistent and unreliable to becoming a trusted, best-in-class asset. I drew on years of experience, training, and collaboration with colleagues to achieve this. I also developed robust data migration processes and created bespoke reporting dashboards to ensure ongoing visibility and usability of the data.

Did you grow up wanting to be a data manager?

Not at all—my early passion was Cartography. I loved creating maps by hand using pen and ink on various materials like plastics and fine art papers. It was a creative and technical pursuit that I found deeply rewarding. Over time, my career naturally evolved toward data management as I moved into more technical roles, and I discovered a new passion for ensuring the quality, integrity, and usability of data.

How did you get here?

I was fortunate to have the support of a fantastic team and an encouraging Exploration Manager who gave me the opportunity to transition into a new career path. That opportunity opened the door—but it was up to me to walk through it. I committed to training, embraced continuous learning, and worked hard to build my own reputation in data management and data quality.

What are some big lessons learned and/or challenges faced along the way?

Two key lessons stand out. First, embrace technology—it’s constantly evolving, and staying adaptable is essential to remaining relevant and effective. Second, always listen. Everyone has a voice, and there’s value in learning from each other’s perspectives and experiences.

What advice do you have for people beginning their career?

My biggest piece of advice is to find joy in what you do and strive to be your best at it. Stay curious, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to bring others along on the journey—collaboration and shared growth make the experience even more rewarding.

Are there any organizations or volunteer groups that you are passionate about?

I’m an active attendee of industry events hosted by PPDM, PESA, and ASEG. I really enjoy connecting with others in the field and learning about the work being done across different organizations. These events offer great insights into industry trends and foster a strong sense of professional community.

What are some of your favorite things to do and/ or places to visit outside of work?

Outside of work, photography is a major passion of mine. I specialize in capturing live theatre, performances, festivals, portraiture, landscapes, sports, and street scenes—it’s a creative outlet that keeps me connected to the arts and the world around me.

I also play basketball regularly, competing in three teams each week—something I’ve enjoyed since the early 1980s.

As a family, my amazing wife, our two teenage young adult kids, and I love camping and exploring Western Australia. We spend a lot of time along the coast, 4WDing, fishing, snorkeling, and discovering the incredible natural beauty the state has to offer.
